Labor Day Weekend Wine Trail

Since we have a mini-break from work with the Labor Day holiday weekend, what better leisure activity than to visit a winery. There are several wine trails to choose from in the Central Virginia region, (yes, we have a wine region) and we went on a short drive this Sunday afternoon to a pretty vineyard just 30 minutes from home called Barboursville Vineyard. In addition to the winery, the estate itself is rich in Jeffersonian and early American history. They offer weekend tours of their winery and for $4 you can enjoy a tasting and go home with a complementary Barboursville wineglass. Also, their grounds are quite enjoyable to walk around on a not-so-hot, end of summer day.

Barboursville Ruins

Located across from the main buildings, on a tree-lined grassy knoll, are the Barboursville Ruins. It's a short hike uphill and a very pleasant and serene place to sit on a bench and read, or have a picnic on the grass. We didn't do any of those things though hehe We just continued to walk around the grounds and take some snapshots and soak-up the silence of being in the countryside.

There are several other vineyards a very short drive from our house and many we haven't seen yet. One forgets the places close to home that are worth taking the time to visit, even if for an hour or so.

I adore vineyards :D It reminds me of summers in Switzerland hillsides, playing around the grape mazes. Now that I'm older I can enjoy it in more ways, namely Wine tasting! ^_^
